Steve Guttenberg’s art seeks to encourage the viewer to look deeper, see as he sees, searching for meaning without access to the complete picture. Legally blind artist Steve Guttenberg’s manifestations of technology, space, color and form are produced exclusively in the digital domain. Working in the near field of his computer display his visual impairment ceases to be a handicap. Mr. Guttenberg’s art is grounded in photography, but his images’ transformations reach far beyond literal representation. The abstract assemblages incorporate elements drawn from the contemporary New York City landscape--where the synthesized textures are believably tactile, colors seem as brilliant as a sunny day, and shadows are as deep as the night. The tensions created by the juxtaposition of negative space and three-dimensional solidity are constants in Mr. Guttenberg’s work. He wants his conjured images to be seen as their own reality, unrelated to their origin. A birth defect was the primary cause of his impaired vision, but as a small child he forced himself to stare into the sun, eyes wide open, because the resulting blaze of color was impossible to resist. The further scarring of his retinas produced more damage and loss of vision. Starting out as a teen aged street artist, Steve Guttenberg later worked as a journalist and record producer, only recently embracing twenty first century technology with his digital imagery.
